Hairspray Production To Be Staged in Stonehaven

Hairspray crewHairspray - one of the most ambitious amateur musical theatre productions ever to be staged in Stonehaven.There are 35 cast members ranging from 12 - 50-plus from all over Aberdeenshire and Tayside.

They range from school pupils, teachers, a DJ and a theatre company owner. Organiser Dr Chris Simpson, who runs Ma Simpson's music shop in Stonehaven, said at the open audition the standard of applicants were astounding -  ranging from experienced actors, singers and dancers to people who had never been on stage before.The music will be provided by a specially-formed 12-piece orchestra  with some folk playing their first ever show alongside professional musicians.

The scenery is going to be a first for Stonehaven Town Hall but is being kept under wraps until opening night. Community volunteers Jill Greenlees and Ann Hodge are helping with costumes and volunteers have been busy scouring charity shops.Props are being made made by Peter Reid, with some on loan from Perth Theatre GroupMusical Director is David McMullan a vocal coach from Ma Simpson's and choreography is by Catriona Cessford.Director is James WestwaterFore more information ring Chris on 01569 766264

Hairspray is a story about segregation in southern American. In 1962 Baltimore, Maryland, plump teenager Tracy Turnblad's dream is to dance on The Corny Collins Show, a local TV dance program based on the real-life Buddy Deane Show. When Tracy wins a role on the show, she becomes a celebrity overnight, and meets a colourful array of characters. She then launches a campaign to integrate the show. Hairspray is a social commentary on the injustices of parts of American society in the 1960s.

The show is on from Wednesday, March 18 to Saturday March 21. Shows Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday evening 7.30 doors open at 7pm. Matinee Saturday 2.30pm doors open at 2pm.Tickets £10 Standard, £8 concessions available from Ma Simpson's or online at www.masimpsons.com
